Big Squids Swim Academy

Supporting children aged 5 to 10 years old to move from our nurturing classes to further independent swimming

Our approach

Our child-centred approach to swimming doesn’t change when your child reaches primary school age. Traditionally at this time children move onto larger pools, bigger class sizes and teachers who are out of the pool. These noisy and often over stimulating environments can be really tricky for kids to manage, so alongside our teaching team we have developed a unique offering  – the Big Squids Swim Academy!

We work closely with our parents to ensure that your child is given the right approach to support their swimming development as an individual. We will ask you about what swimming experience your child has had previously and how we can make them feel safe, valued and included. This will aid them in building water confidence and learning to swim!

Our Big Squids sessions offer small class sizes with our teachers in the water to support your child, offering quicker progression and a more individual tuition. Parents are allowed on the poolside to fully spectate their child’s class. We believe it’s important to work with families through the whole swimming journey to independence so communication is highly valued across our swim network.

Our Big Squids programme

Earn awards

We have a flexible approach to awards, we understand that children are motivated by different things so we have a variety of badges, certificates and prizes. Our friendly teachers work with parents to decide what is the best thing to be focusing on for your child.

Follow the stages

We are able to access both STA and Swim England levels and stages so we can choose the programme that is right for your child. This is a great way of ensuring that their development is appropriate for their experience and continuity of learning.

A flexible programme

We work on a matrix of milestones that children need to go through to become independent swimmers, a lot of swimming is based on physical development so we ensure that our supportive and adaptable teachers work with them closely.

The stages

Start your swimming journey with Baby Squids, and earn awards and badges along the way. Display these proudly as your child goes from taking baby steps, to swimming confidently on their own.

Splashers

0-12 months

The start of your swimming journey with your child is all about you and the support you give them to develop over their first year.

In the water, babies can do so much more than they can do on land! Our Splashers milestones are all about learning to hold your baby, having fun with them while enjoying your special bond in a calm and supportive environment.

Paddlers

1–2 years

Never is it more valuable to carry on, or get started, with your child’s journey in the pool than now!

Paddlers are becoming walking and talking toddlers. They know their own minds and they are not afraid to show us their frustration! This is an amazing time for the children to have lots of fun in the water and try new things. Some of our favourite things to teach are monkeying around the pool, jumping off the big floats and safely holding onto the bar.

Kickers

2–3 years

Our Kickers programme works with parents to build their child’s confidence and independence in the water; such an important stage before they learn to swim on their own.

Kickers includes lots of
fun activities, games and
songs which they will now
merrily sing along to! Our
super toddlers LOVE the
big float, jumping, trying out
swimming by themselves,
seahorse races on a woggle
and learning how to pick up
sinkies!

Swimmers

3–4 years

Our Swimmers have come so far and things start to change at this stage as they enter the water by themselves for the first time! These milestones are all about learning how to be safe and independent in the water

Our teachers have the time and patience to take things slowly and support this transition while mum and dad can proudly move to the side to watch their little one’s transformation!
